For Brian
Rike, three years make a huge difference. In 2004, he graduated
from Stephen F. Austin High School with hopes of continuing
his baseball career at the next level. Few colleges recruited
him. But one, Louisiana Tech University, invited him on as a
walk-on and he accepted. It helped that there was a built-in
"Tech connection" with Brian. His parents, Andy and
Liz Rike, attended the school in Ruston. A year later, he earned
a scholarship. And now, Brian Rike is playing for the professional
ranks. The junior outfielder for the LaTech Bulldogs was chosen
by the Colorado Rockies in the
second round of the annual major league
2007 draft. |

Rike previously
earned second team honors by Baseball America and Louisville
Slugger and
was selected in the second round by the Colorado Rockies in
this year’s draft.
He hit 20 home runs and drove in 66 RBI while scoring 74 runs. |

According
to Tech records, that's the earliest any player in the program's
history has been chosen, the Western Athletic Conference Player
of the Year being the 72nd overall player taken. |
